Should we legalize Marijuana in India ?
Probably a tough one to answer but the demands coming from Oncologists needs a detailed discussion. Top oncologists of Bengaluru are lobbying with the Centre to lift the ban on cannabis to allow them to explore the medicinal uses of the plant. Marijuana or ganja could offer an effective cure for cancer. Their interest in cannabis research was stirred up during recent debates on tobacco farming.
“We are encouraging cultivation of tobacco that causes various types of cancer. At the other end, we are ignoring the medicinal properties of a plant that can help cancer patients. We are not even able to take up research as procurement of the plant is illegal in India, whereas oncologists in 21 states of the US are prescribing derivatives of cannabis for cancer treatment,” Dr Vishal Rao, surgical oncologist, HCG, told TOI.
Series of research’s have further proved the benefits of Marijuana in cancer treatment and other life threatening diseases like HIV. In a study released by journal AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses earlier in 2014 suggest, plant may be able to stop the spread of the HIV disease.
Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s chief medical correspondent filmed a documentary that aired on CNN , he concludes “we have been terribly and systematically misled for nearly 70 years in the United States, and I apologize for my own role in that.”
Business Insider lists down 23 Medical Uses Of Marijuana, much to ponder and initiate an informed discussion amongst policy makers and researchers in India.
